The entire school has only five students. Abydos High School, surrounded by desert, is on the verge of closure. In order to combat the situation, the five students are busy working as a 'task force' every day. One day, one of the students, Shiroko, meets an adult. He was a 'teacher' dispatched by the General Student Council.[1]
Summary
The episode begins inside a train, where a woman, bleeding from her shoulders down to her legs, talks about responsibilities and choices to Sensei, and asks for their help, believing he could bring them to a brighter future, different than their current twisted fate. There, in a chaotic and ruined scene, a girl pointed the pistol at a man, fired three shots, the tablet broken and fell down.
The story then transitions to the bedroom of Sunaookami Shiroko, a girl from Abydos High School who wakes up from her sleep after her alarm rings. She stares for a moment into the sky through her window, then proceeds to change into her school uniform, get onto her bicycle, and ride to school.
A view of Kivotos is then shown. A news report can be heard from a jumbotron about the recent disappearance of the General Student Council's President and the fortunate recovery of the Sanctum Tower's light which allowed for the gradual subsiding of Kivotos' chaos.
In the Abydos High School, the five members of the Countermeasures Committee gather inside a classroom. Kuromi Serika, one of the members, is shocked at how Shiroko managed to cycle to the Abydos Industrial District and back to their school, which should be around hundreds of kilometers. Shiroko thinks it was just the right amount of distance to ride, though. She then asks Serika what she did during the weekends, which Serika hesitantly replies with her reading at the library. Okusora Ayane, another member, is surprised to hear that as she was also in the library but couldn't see Serika anywhere. Serika, trying to hide something, asks what Ayane was reading. Ayane says she was looking for information regarding the Double Over Head Camshaft (DOHC) problem she found while repairing the school houses. Serika then asks Takanashi Hoshino, who apparently spent most of her time sleeping like an old uncle would do. Unsurprised, she asks Izayoi Nonomi instead. Nonomi spent the weekends shopping for snacks, daily necessities, and forty dumbbells (for some reason) using her golden credit card.
After their little chit-chat, the five of them begin their regular meeting, The first topic is about the recent formation of Kivotos, the Academy City, which maintains balance among all the schools within. However, with the Student Council President's disappearance, several autonomous school district fell into chaos. Nonomi then asks about the peace treaty between Trinity General School and Gehenna Academy, which Shiroko recalls it being named the Eden Treaty. Since the Student Council President, the initiator of the treaty, disappeared, nobody knows what to do with it.
Serika also mentions that she overheard from the owner of the Shiba Seki Ramen store that the Kata-Kata Helmet Gang has been causing trouble again lately. Security in Abydos has been worsening recently, as told by Nonomi, and despite their numerous attempts to request aid from the General Student Council, no support in any form has ever been given. Shiroko thinks it might be because the General Student Council is too busy with more serious matters. They also have their own share of important matters to deal with, such as their debts with Kaiser Loans. With their current rate of payment, the teller says it'll take 309 years and 2 months till their debt is settled. The sun begins to set, and Shiroko begins to cycle home as the Countermeasures Committee girls say goodbye to each other. While Shiroko goes to sleep, the story transitions to our protagonist, Sensei, who just arrived at Abydos on a train.
The next day, a gang of robots is confronting a group of three delinquents. The robot gang's leader is infuriated that his hairstyle is being mocked by the delinquents and orders his underlings to attack them. However, the delinquents are pretty strong themselves, and they begin shooting at the robots while Shiroko cycles past them from the side, emphasizing how common firearms are in the world of Kivotos.
On her way to school, Shiroko finds a man lying on the ground with his butt sticking out. It seems he passed out due to heat stroke. as the man desperately asks for water with his lack of breath, Shiroko offers her energy drink. Afterwards, the story cuts to Sensei feeling rejuvenated after having a drink at Abydos. Nonomi worriedly asks Shiroko if she kidnapped the person. Ayane does not expect Shiroko to finally commit a crime, while Serika tells them to figure things out before word gets out. Shiroko calmly tells them the man wanted to see their school. He explains that despite knowing Abydos is a desert-filled district, he still got heatstroke and passed out. Nonomi, Ayane, and Serika look at the person, with Ayane and Serika signalling Nonomi to ask the question. Nonomi then asks if the man could introduce himself. He completely forgot, so he introduces himself as the Sensei from SCHALE. Hearing that he's associated with the General Student Council, the three girls are relieved their request for backup is finally heard. Sensei also gives them a certificate of transfer, which will allow them to receive ammunition and supplies. Joyed by the news, Serika goes to look for Hoshino, who should be in her usual sleeping place. As she runs, Shiroko decides it's time they introduce themselves to Sensei.
Shiroko takes Sensei on a tour around the school. The serious desertification around Abydos is quite clear. It's been like this even before Shiroko entered the school. Sensei asks about the students of the school. Due to the enormous debt, many students decided to leave or transfer to another school, leaving the five of them as the Countermeasures Committee, taking on all kinds of commissions with the hope of paying their debt. Eventually, the two arrive at an empty room, which Shiroko says will be Sensei's office. Looking around, Sensei asks why Shiroko and the others want to protect the school. Although Shiroko is taken aback by the sudden question, gunshots are heard from a distance, putting their conversation on hold. It's the Kata-Kata Helmet Gang, and they aim to take over the school knowing full well the Abydos students are at a big disadvantage.
The Countermeasures Committee members try to fight back despite their low amount of ammo and supplies, while Sensei remains inside the building with his tablet, which contains his reliable OS, Arona. The girls are quite uncoordinated though, which gives the gang members more of a leverage. Seeing the dire situation, Sensei runs outside the building. As he stands in front of the main entrance exhausted from the running, he yells, asking why the Abydos girls want to protect their school. They reply with the fact this is where they belong, which is a sufficient answer to him. He asks the gang members to leave, which irritates the leader. Sensei then begins to lead the girls into battle, and with his guidance and better coordination, the Abydos girls are able to emerge victorious. The girls thank Sensei for the help, and eventually, the night sets in. The story ends with Sensei entering his tablet to meet Arona, who is sleeping soundly. Arona wakes up and greets him.
